A late scoring run helped the SMU men’s basketball team beat Memphis, 70-60, Saturday at Moody Coliseum.

Papa Dia scored a career-high 23 points, and Derek Williams led the team with 25, adding a career-high 14 free throws and earning his second career double-double.

The Mustangs (10-10, 3-3 C-USA) led by four with :37 left on the clock, but Williams hit five straight free throws on the next four SMU possessions to seal the win.

For Memphis (15-6, 5-2), Elliot Williams scored 19 points and Roburt Sallie added 17. The loss drops the Tigers out of first place in the conference, while SMU moves up to seventh place, 2.5 games out of first.

Next up, the Mustangs travel to Mississippi to take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Currently sitting at 10-10 and 3-3 in conference, SMU will look to return to Moody Coliseum on Feb. 10 with a winning record.
