In only his first season in the NFL, New Orleans Saints kicker Thomas Morstead earned a Super Bowl ring after the Saints beat the Colts, 31-17, Sunday in Miami.

Morstead executed an on-side kick at the beginning of the second half, which led to a New Orleans touchdown, giving the Saints the lead for good.

At SMU, Morstead earned All-Conference USA honors, after leading the conference in punting and ranked ninth in the nation with a 44.6-yard punt average.

The Pearland, Texas native was a fifth-round draft choice of the Saints, 164th overall, in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was the second punter taken overall.

Morstead becomes the first SMU alum to earn a Super Bowl ring since Dale Hellestrae did it in 1996 with the Dallas Cowboys.
