Campus News Blog: Is Natural Gas Safer?

Catastrophe. As millions of gallons of oil spew into the Gulf of Mexico, am I the only one thinking alternative energy sounds pretty good right now?

The Bush Institute tackled the issue of alternative fuel in their TV show, Ideas in Action, hosted by Jim Glassman. In the recent episode,” Natural Gas Nation, “ experts discuss the concerns of drilling and new technologies.

The recent oil spill could devastate the coastal communities surrounding the Gulf. The impact on the shrimping industry alone is huge. I’ve spent a lot of time on the Texas coast and these people wait all year for shrimp season. This is how they support their families–and what about the wildlife?

What is the alternative? Some say natural gas, but it can also be dangerous.

Could natural gas drilling cause a similar ecological threat?

Some say there are concerns about water contamination.

However, one guest on the show, Joseph Sluzar, said better communication and education is needed to help eliminate fears. Sluzar is the County Attorney for Broome County, New York, which sits on top of the largest known reserve of natural gas in the United States.

I don’t know in light of recent events—fear seems like an appropriate response to me.
