Campus News Blog: Safe to Fly to Mexico?

According to a recent piece in the New York Times travel section, the number of international tourists who flew to Mexico from January to August has increased 19 percent over the same period last year, and most were from the U.S.

Good news for SMU students who want to go to beach spots in Mexico like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel and others for spring break. Although worried mothers and fathers alike may warn their kids against traveling to Mexico, often times the travel warnings evoke unnecessary panic among travelers. The truth is that there is violence going on in various parts of Mexico, and it is usually unpredictable. But, the cartels that are conducting the current drug war have claimed different areas of Mexico, and touristic places like Cancun are not on the top of their agenda, or on it at all. So don’t mark my word, but I’d say Cancun and places not on the border and not in major cities like Mexico City, are a go.
