Politics Blog: Obama’s Trip to India: $200 million per day?

President Barack Obama has embarked upon his four-country Asian visit, stopping by India first. His talks of US-India relations are complemented by his participation in the celebration of Diwali, the Indian “festival of lights.”

Nonetheless, while Obama celebrates in India, people in America cannot help but circulate rumors about the undisclosed cost of his trip. Right-wing bloggers and talk-radio hosts firmly assert that the president’s trip is costing taxpayers an overwhelming $200 million per day!

Conversely, as FactCheck.org explains, the war in Afghanistan is currently costing the United States about $5.7 billion per month. Divide that by roughly 30 days in a month and you get a figure close to $190 million per day. How can a friendly visit to another country cost more than a devastating war? Obama fan or not, one has to realize that these rumors are a bit farfetched and fabricated.

New York magazine’s clever headline states, “Republican Anger Over Cost of Obama’s Trip to India Will Not Be Stopped by Facts.”  However, fact is that Obama is doing inexpensive things in India (like mingling with the natives) to strengthen his image internationally.
