No. 32 Women’s Tennis Finishes Off Wichita State in Regular Season Finale

The No. 32 Mustangs ended their regular season play Saturday with a 5-2 win over Wichita State. Heading into the Conference USA Championship Tournament this weekend in Orlando the team is 19-4.

SMU started the day by winning two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point.

Top duo Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova downed Fernandez/Blaskova 8-6, their 17th win this spring.

At No. 2 Edyta Cieplucha and Heather Steinbauer defeated Budiharto/Zotter with an 8-3 win. The pair now has a record of 17-4.

In singles, Mustangs won their matches in the top four positions to secure the SMU win.

No. 10 singles player in the nation Lesniak swept over Budiharto 6-0, 6-2 and now has 20 match wins under her belt this spring. In the SMU program, the junior is in a tie for second place on the all-time single season wins list (38) and fifth place on the all-time career wins list (81).

Edyta Cieplucha managed a win over Zotter 7-6, 3-6, 10-3 at the No. 2 position.

Malyarchikova, ranked No. 122 in the nation, had a 6-2, 6-0 win over Blaskova.

The last SMU singles win of the day was Steinbauer’s defeat over Venticinque, 6-2, 6-4.

The Mustangs return to the courts this weekend at the 2011 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Tournament hosted by UCF in Orlando.
