SMU Awards Degrees

SMU celebrated its 96th Commencement ceremony in Moody Coliseum on Saturday morning. SMU eawarded nearly 2,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas was the 2011 commencement speaker.

Texans re-elected Sen. Cornyn in 2008 for a second six-year term in the U.S. Senate. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving as a district judge, a member of the Texas Supreme Court and as Texas Attorney General. Sen. Cornyn currently sits on the Senate Finance, Judiciary, Armed Services and Budget Committees.

A member of the Class of 1961 also addressed the graduates. The Class of 1961 was celebrating the 50th anniversary from SMU.

SMU also awarded two honorary degrees. On Monday on his visit to the university for the Hart Global Leaders Forum the Dalai Lama received a Doctor of Humane Letters. Earlier today, Pius NKonzo Langa, former chief justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, received a Doctor of Laws.
