1st Thursday is happening again in December. Visit Bishop Arts District this Thursday evening as “Bishop Arts Gives Back.” A portion of proceeds of sales this night will be donated to the Turner House renovation efforts.

Turner House is located in the historic Winnetka Heights neighborhood in Oak Cliff, it the home of the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts. “This beautiful landmark provides an elegant and charming location for many types of events. The Society, founded in 1926, seeks to preserve this architectural jewel and enhance the quality of life in North Oak Cliff by providing a unique space for community and private events.”

Also, open house at Hula Hotties Cafe. They will have a tasting of holiday desserts 6p-9p at 244 W. Davis.

Big D Blog: October’s Edition of 1st Thursdays

What happens at Bishop Arts District every first Thursday of the month? A friendly event called “1st Thursdays.” On Oct. 1, shops and restaurants kept their doors open late for shoppers and late night diners.

The popular fashion and cosmetic shop, I’m that Grrl, gave a 10 percent discount on merchandise to customers and a 15 percent discount to students. Other shops also had special promos going on as well.

As the sun began to hide slowly and neon signs began to glow, more and more people trickled into the area.

My friend Kristian and I decided to explore other boutiques in the district. As we walked into Indigo 1745, I recognized a familiar face working behind the counter. A fellow orch-dork of mine from my high school years. Tracy Popken and were in the orchestra together in middle school and after high school I didn’t see her again. She now works at Indigo 1745, a specialty boutique. On Sunday, she moved into her newly bought house just blocks from Bishop Arts. Besides working at the shop, Tracy revamps vintage clothes from her home. The area is definitely a boom district with artsy folks.

I’ll be back to Bishop Arts District before November’s edition of 1st Thursdays, scheduled for Nov. 5.

I look forward to chatting with Tracy again.
