No. 33 Women’s Tennis Places Second at C-USA Championship

The No. 33 SMU Women’s Tennis team faced No. 22 Tulsa in a final showdown for the title of Conference USA Champions on Sunday. The Mustangs battled closely but ultimately fell to Tulsa with a score of 4-3.

This is the first finals match in league history that was determined by a 4-3 win.

Tulsa started things off with the first point of the match by winning two of three doubles positions. Ewa Szatkowska and Anastasia Erofeeva captured an 8-4 victory over SMU’s Heather Steinbauer and Edyta Cieplucha at the No. 2 line.

The No. 1 position Mustang duo Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova answered by winning their match 8-3 against Alexandra Kichoutkin and Jo-Anne Karaitiana, but the point was decided in the favor of Tulsa when Bonny Davidson and Sam Vickers defeated Shahzoda Hatamova and Ashley Turpin 8-4.

In singles, the Mustangs came back with three wins, but Tulsa also grabbed three wins of their own.

No. 9 nationally ranked Lesniak continued her winning streak by putting another win up on the board when she defeated Kickoutkin 6-3, 6-2 at the top line. Lesniak has won 19 straight singles matches and 23 overall this spring.

Then, Tulsa’s Michelle Farley defeated Steinbauer 6-2, 6-1, but SMU answered with a 7-5, 6-2 win by Cieplucha over Erofeeva and a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win by Malyarchikova over Szatkowska.

Tulsa’s Vickers then pulled out a win against SMU’s Hatamova 6-4, 6-1, tying the game up at three a piece.

It all came down to a face-off at No. 6 between SMU’s Ashley Turpin and Tulsa’s Jo-Anne Karaitiana. Turpin won the first set 7-5, but Karaitiana grabbed the next two, 6-2, 6-1.

The SMU women made it to the finals by defeating East Carolina 4-0 and Marshall 4-1.

They are now waiting for the notification of their placement in the 2011 NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
