The SMU men’s tennis team finished regular season play with a 5-2 loss against conference rival Rice on Saturday. The Mustangs end their season with an overall record of 16-8 and 3-2 in conference matches.
The Mustangs didn’t win the doubles point, but made the Owls work for the win– sending two of the matches to tiebreakers.
SMU’s No. 88 ranked duo Artem Baradach and Caston Cuadranti battled it out against Rice’s No. 80 ranked pair of Peter Frank and Sam Garforth-Bles, but lost 8-7 (7-3).
Another SMU pair, Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh, didn’t give up their match easily. They played hard against Owls Christian Saravia and Michael Nuesslein for a close 9-8 (7-5) loss. Rice’s Oscar Podlewski and Harry Fowler overtook SMU’s Tobias Flood and Joseph Hattrup 8-4.
In singles, the Mustangs picked up two wins, one by Baradach and the other by Mischa Nowicki.
Baradach, the nation’s No. 44 singles player, defeated Rice’s No. 96 Fowler 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Badarach finishes his season with a record of 11-4. Mischa Nowicki picked up the other win when he downed Saravia 6-4, 6-1.
The Mustangs return to the courts this weekend for the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
