Parents Weekend at SMU turned out to be a great weekend for the SMU football team. The buzz on the boulevard was that if SMU won they would be eligible for a bowl game for the first time in 25 years. With students excited about the team’s recent success and parents excited too, many families headed to the game.

“I cannot believe how many people are here,” Dennis Cahill, a parent of SMU junior Amy Cahill, exclaimed.

My own parents, Laura and Ed Ryan, were shocked by how full Ford Stadium was and said they had never seen the stadium so full. They also said they had never seen the student body so fired up about the football team.

Many of my friends want to caravan to the bowl game (as long as it is not in Hawaii, that is). While the parents and students were energized about the win and bowl game eligibility, the win over UTEP represented something else as well.

With the 35-31 win over UTEP, SMU is now first in the Conference USA West Division. This is a huge deal!

Could SMU be turning around its football program? Is the Pony Express back in action? After talking to some SMU parents who attended SMU back in the glory days of its football team, they said nothing was more exciting than going to football games. Many members of the SMU student body, including myself, would love to see the program return to those days.
