Arts Beat: A True Silver Lining

Fans from across the nation tuned in last week for the season finale of The Bachelor.

Jason Mesnick, the bachelor and single father from Seattle, Oregon, narrowed his decision down to two women, Molly Malaney from Grand Rapids, Mich., and Melissa Rycroft from right here in Dallas.

Melissa, as expected, went home that day wearing an engagement ring from Jason. Everyone agreed that Melissa had the most chemistry with Jason and was the perfect fit for the bachelor.

However, in a special “After the Final Rose” episode, Jason publically broke up with Melissa, telling her that he had made the wrong decision and was really in love with Molly.

What is the defining boundary where reality TV intervenes too much in someone’s personal life?

Humiliated and broken-hearted, Melissa took off her ring, handed it back to Jason and asked him to never contact her again. She exited the studio with swarming camera men determined to capture her reaction from every angle.

What happened to privacy in a relationship?

About a month after this episode was filmed, Melissa released an official statement to ABC, “I don’t regret anything that happened over the past few months; because I know I wouldn’t be where I am today had none of it happened.”

Currently, Jason and Molly are dating, and Molly plans to make the move to Seattle to be closer to Jason and his son Ty.

Melissa is living in Dallas and pursuing a teaching career. She recently joined the cast for the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars, which airs on Mondays at 7 p.m.

Looks like she’s doing just fine without the old bachelor by her side.
