SMU’s “Pony Express” reunited Friday to accept the Doak Walker Legends Award at the Hilton Anatole Hotel, joining a prestigious list of running back recipients who have made a career for themselves after years of success on the football field.

Former Mustang teammates Eric Dickerson and Craig James led the SMU football team to national prominence in the early 1980’s as two of the most successful running backs in the history of college football. Both went on to lead their teams in the NFL, earning several individual honors. The Pro Football Hall of Fame elected Dickerson in 1999.

“These awards are a reflection of your team,” said James, who was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1985. “We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have good coaches and teammates.”

The two returned to SMU with the football program in familiar stage this year, after June Jones led the Mustangs to their first bowl win since James and Dickerson won one with the Mustangs 25 years ago.

University of Iowa running back Shonn Greene celebrated his recognition as the 2008 Doak Walker Award winner Friday night in Dallas.

The annual award, named for SMU’s legendary football player, goes to college football’s best running back, voted on by a committee of sportswriters, television commentators, analysts, radio personalities, former All-Americans and All-Pro NFL players. Greene ran for more than 100 yards in every game this season, totaling 1,850.

“I’m honored to be here,” Greene said. “This is a prestigious award and I’m just happy to be here.”

Former Cowboy and NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Calvin Hill received the 2008 Doak Walker Legends Award, given to former college football players who exemplify a record of leadership in the community.

“Just to have my name associated with Doak Walker, makes me giddy,” Hill said.

The V.I.P. guest list included Roger Staubach, Pat Summerall, June Jones, Matt Doherty, Rayfield Wright, Kirk Ferentz, and Drew Pearson.

ESPN’s College GameDay hosts Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, and Lee Corso hosted the dinner ceremony with some humor and interviews with both winners.

Greg Lewis won the first Doak Walker Award in 1990. Past winners include Eddie George, LaDainian Tomlinson, Reggie Bush, Ricky Williams, Larry Johnson, and Cedric Benson.
