If you didn’t know already, the SMU Police Department has introduced its new Web site. The new site features a blog with RSS feed subscription capabilities, biographies, and crime alerts.

Impressive?

The blog feature is the most impressive. The police department has become aware of RSS feeds and how popular they have become to retrieve information.

The SMU community should take advantage of this new RSS subscription. You will receive alerts immediately from the department itself.

The site is a lot more attractive than it once was. It is easier to navigate and it looks interesting. Safety tips are provided, as well as job postings, helpful links, and the annual security reports – all important information that the SMU community should look for.

Police Blotter: Pre-Turkey Trouble

November 21, 2008 by · Comments Off

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, some are working up quite the appetite with their wrongdoings.

Fall 2008′s underage drinking citation tally sits at 155.

On Nov. 16 at 2:58 a.m., a non-affiliated man reported he was approached from behind by three males in the Knox/Henderson area. He said they struck him on the back of his head with a pistol. He said they blindfolded him and threw him in the back of his own vehicle. He said they drove him around to several bank locations and made him withdraw money. He said they drove him to the 3000 block of SMU Blvd., kicked him out the vehicle and drove away. Dallas Police are currently investigating this case.

Fraternities have seen a spike in “criminal mischief.” Five such reports have been filed over the past week at houses including Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Sigma.

And on Nov. 15, both the Pi Kappa Alpha and Figi fraternities were slapped with referrals to the Student Conduct Officer for causing damage to each others houses.

Check back after the break to see reports from over the holiday.

Police Blotter: Homecoming Edition

November 12, 2008 by · Comments Off

Behind the Boulevard’s floats, free food and fun, it was business as usual for police.

Homecoming weekend ushered in nine underage drinking citations. Fall 2008′s tally is now 144.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon house saw some action on Saturday. At 12:57 a.m., a window was found shattered.

Two hours later, the University Park Fire Department was called to the house when someone sprayed water on the smoke detector, shorting it out and activating the alarm. Several students were referred to the Student Conduct Officer for not evacuting during a fire alarm.

Stolen items of the weekend: soda and lingerie

On Sunday, Nov. 9, a male Aramark staff member reported a six-pack of Mr. Pibbs soda and a Victoria’s Secret nightgown stolen from his vehicle at the loading dock at 6000 Ownby (behind McElvaney Hall) at 11:36 p.m. The case is still under investigation.

Police Blotter: Election Edition

November 7, 2008 by · Comments Off

Emotions ran wild with Obama’s historic win Tuesday night. Students expressed both elation and anger, as most prevalently seen in their statuses on Facebook.

What did this mean for SMU police? Protests? Riots? Not so much. Unlike the fight, fire and noose incident at Baylor University in Waco, SMU remained rather quiet.

On election day, Tuesday, an iPod was reported stolen from Moody Coliseum, and a female student reported fraudulent charges on her credit card.

The day after the election, at 10:13 a.m., a female student reported she had been sexually assaulted at the beginning of the school year by an acquaintance. The case remains open.

Thirteen minutes later, a student was busted for possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in Peyton Hall.

Check back next week for the aftermath of Homecoming weekend.

Police Blotter: Halloween Brings Ghoulish Behavior

November 6, 2008 by · Comments Off

Throughout October, perhaps it was Halloween that had some students in a mischievous mood.

In particular, parking garages experienced a spike in wrongdoings:

On Oct. 13, a student was busted for stealing some orange traffic cones from the Binkley garage at 10:16 p.m.

That Saturday, Oct. 18, one minor was caught drinking and urinating in Binkley at 2:03 a.m.

Five hours later in the same garage, police snagged one student for drug paraphernalia and another for underage drinking.

On Oct. 28, a portable GPS navigation device and radar detector were reported stolen from a student’s vehicle in Dedman 3 Parking Lot at 12:52 a.m.

Stolen Item of the Week: a Greek paddle. On Oct. 28, one was reported stolen at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house at 1:59 p.m. This case is still open.

Halloween weekend warranted 11 underage drinking citations.

That brings Fall 2008′s tally to 130.

Police Blotter: Drinking, Urinating and Stealing…Oh My!

October 10, 2008 by · Comments Off

The days leading up to Fall Break were rather eventful for SMU PD.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, nine underage drinking citations were handed out. Snider, Boaz and McElvaney halls all received visits from SMU PD. The 3000 block of Binkley Ave. (near the intramurals field) also welcomed police as they handed out four MICs to students there.

That brings Fall 2008′s underage drinking citation tally to 102.

That same morning at 2:32 a.m., a student was caught urinating in public at the Sigma Chi house. He or she was referred to the Student Conduct Officer.

Stolen item of the week: bicycles. Between Oct. 7 and Oct. 9, five bikes, a bike seat and a bike tire were reported stolen from various locations around campus.

And the pilfering didn’t stop there. Over the past two weeks, three cell phones, two laptop chargers, a laptop and prescribed medication have all gone missing.

Maybe the anticipation of Fall Break got students feeling more rambunctious than usual. Maybe the stress of midterms pushed some people over the edge. Who knows. But stay tuned for the next police blotter with illicit incidents from the four-day weekend.
