SMU Tennis Player Named Conference Player of the Year

SMU women’s tennis player Marta Lesniak was awarded Conference USA Player of the Year Thursday, the same day she earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Lesniak went 28-5 this season at the Mustangs’ No. 1 singles spot. The sophomore is also the highest ranked ranked player in C-USA at No. 28 in the ITA.

Lesniak earned a 6-0 record against C-USA opponents and a 7-2 record against nationally ranked players. In the 2009-2010 season, she earned four C-USA Player of the Week awards.

Another Mustang recognized for her performance this season was Shahzoda Hatamova who won the Conference USA Freshman of the Year award.

Hatamova is 27-8 on the season, with eight wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots. She played most of the season at No. 4 singles, earning a 11-1 record. In conference play, she went 7-1.

Lesniak will compete at the NCAA Championships beginning May 26 in Athens, Ga.

The No. 31 SMU women’s tennis team led Conference USA with five All-Conference honorees. The team will take on Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAA Team Championships May 14 in Stanford, Calif.

Women’s Tennis Team Earns Five All C-USA Selections

The No. 31 nationally ranked SMU women’s tennis team had five players earn 2010 conference honors, the most of any C-USA team.

Sophomores Marta Lesniak (28-5) and Aleksandra Malyarchikova (25-5) each made the first team for the second straight season. Lesniak is the No. 28 ranked player in the country.

Two freshmen, Edyta Cieplucha (17-2) and Shahzoda Hatamova (27-8), earned spots on the conference’s second team.

Senior Pavi Francis (19-8) was selected to the third team.

SMU takes on Pepperdine (12-1) in the first round of the NCAA Championship on May 14 in Stanford, Calif.

Mustangs Upset In Semifinals

The No. 27 and top seeded SMU women’s tennis team fell 4-2 Saturday to the hands of fourth-seeded Marshall in the Conference USA semifinals in Tulsa.

The Mustangs won the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches but lost the last three singles matches and the doubles point.

SMU (23-4) will wait to hear the NCAA’s selections on May 4 for the NCAA Tournament.

SMU Women Earn Top Seed In Conference Tournament

After finishing the regular season with a No. 27 national ranking, the SMU women’s tennis team looks to defend its Conference USA title as the No. 1 seed.

The Mustangs (22-3) received a first round bye and will take on the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 8 Southern Miss and No. 9 Memphis. The second round match up is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Tulsa.

SMU enters the season finale tournament with three ITA ranked singles players: No. 29 Marta Lesniak, No. 114 Aleksandra Malyarchikova, and No. 116 Edyta Cieplucha. These three helped the team go 6-0 in C-USA play this season.

The next closest ranked team is No. 35 Tulsa and No. 47 Rice. SMU topped both teams during the regular season.

The C-USA Championship runs April 22-25. The champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on Tuesday, April 27; the tournament begins on May 1.

No. 28 SMU Women’s Tennis Continues Conference Win Streak

The SMU women’s tennis team improved to 5-0 in Conference USA play after routing Central Florida 6-1 Sunday at the Turpin Tennis Center.

The Mustangs (21-3, 5-0 C-USA) won two of the three doubles match to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. In singles, Marta Lesniak dropped her first set before coming back to win at the No. 1 singles spot.

Aleksandra Malyarchikova, Shahzoda Hatamova, Edyta Cieplucha, and Pavi Francis each won in straight sets. The only point surrendered by SMU came when Sophie Quist lost at the No. 6 singles spot.

SMU looks to close out the regular season perfect in C-USA play with a win in their last match Saturday against Rice at the Turpin Tennis Center.

The conference championship begins April 22 in Tulsa.
