Sports Blog: SMU vs. UAB Predictions

Kyle Padron and the SMU Mustangs may not have brought their A-Game to Lubbock, but they played hard and showed a lot of improvement from last year. Credit is due to Texas Tech’s defense, which is debatably the best SMU has seen in the Padron Era. The Raider’s defense was able to put a lot of pressure on wide receivers Aldrick Robinson and Cole Beasley as well as a sufficient pass rush on Padron with just four defensive linemen.

Overall, SMU proved that the Ponies can hang with a prestigious Big 12 program.

Padron suffered a stinger at the end of the game and came out for the last play complaining of soreness in his ribs and throwing wrist. He fully participated in practice Monday morning and will definitely be starting for the Mustangs Saturday.

Last weekend’s mistakes, if corrected, could lead to a victory this Saturday against UAB. SMU had four turnovers on Sunday and three of them led to touchdowns by the Red Raiders. Fewer turnovers are the key to the offense winning against UAB. Last week UAB lost a nail biter against Florida Atlantic University in the 4th quarter, 32-31. If the Mustang offense stays on their A-game this week, the end score this Saturday should not be as close.

UAB’s offense is centered on their running game. Quarterback David Isabelle rushed for 214 yards on 22 attempts and only passed the ball for 79 yards. SMU only allowed 72 rushing yards against Texas Tech’s Air-Raid offense. This shows a huge improvement from last year’s Pony defense.

If SMU’s defense can contain UAB’s QB Isabelle, the ponies should easily come out with a win in this week.

At the game Saturday Sept. 11, fans are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue to show support for the United States and the Mustangs. The game will have a patriotic theme and free tickets will be given to first responders, emergency medical personnel, and anyone with a Military ID. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
