This weekend the SMU men’s tennis team improves to 5-5 with wins over both of its opponents, beating UTSA 4-3 and conference rival Memphis 5-2.

On Saturday the Mustangs had a close battle against University of Texas at San Antonio, with SMU gaining the final 4-3 victory.

The SMU duo Joseph Hattup and Tobias Flood won their match against UTSA’s Yannick Junger while teammates Robert Sajovich and Adham el-Effendi also beat Max Stratmann and Kolby Kilgo 8-6. No. 1 position Mustangs Bryan Griffin and Gaston Cuadranti fell to Daniel Moreiras and Martin Ayala 8-4, but with two of three doubles match wins the Ponies secured the point.

In singles play, SMU’s David Costa downed Ayala 6-4, 6-2 at the top line. The other singles points for the Mustangs were gained by Cuadranti, who won against Junger (6-1, 6-4), and Sajovich, who defeated Daniel Moser with two straight 6-2 set wins.

UTSA’s points were earned when Brown retired Griffin 6-0, 6-2 and Moreiras finished Flood with 6-4, 6-3 sets. Mustang Nowicki played close against Stratmann for three sets but finally lost 7-5, 6-7, 10-6.

On Sunday against Memphis the Mustangs captured the doubles point as well. Hattup and Flood had an 8-5 win over Joe Salisbury and David O’Hare. Sajovich and el-Effendi also tag teamed to beat John Taylor and Leon Naseman 8-6.

Once again in the No. 1 doubles position the Mustangs fell, with Artem Baradach and Cuadranti going down 8-6 to David Henry and Jordan Smith.

The men’s tennis team was ousted from the 2010 Conference USA Championship tournament Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Tulsa University at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston.

Juniors Darren Walsh and Adham el-Effendi, ranked as the No. 45 doubles team in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, fought for an 8-5 over the Golden Hurricane’s No. 27 duo of Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling at the top spot.

Tulsa came back with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, however, to take a 1-0 lead.

Watling beat SMU junior David Costa at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-2) before the Mustangs’ No. 63-ranked Artem Baradach upset the Golden Hurricane’s No. 35 Marcelo Arevalo (6-4, 6-2) at the top spot.

But freshmen Tobias Flood and Pablo Perez-Esnaola fell to their Tulsa opponents at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, as the Golden Hurricane sealed the 4-1 win and earn a trip to the championship game.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” head coach Carl Neufeld said on “We won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and most of the time you’re able to win the match doing that.”
