SMU’s du Toit Named C-USA Athlete of the Week

SMU sophomore Simone du Toit was named the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week Tuesday after a pair of Top-10 finishes at the Oliver Jackson Open in Abilene.

She shares the weekly honor with junior Anderson Mutegi of the University of Texas-El Paso.

At the Oliver Jackson Open, du Toit recorded her season-best distance of 54.45 meters in the discus, which was good for sixth-best in this year’s NCAA rankings.

She won another title with a toss of 16.35 meters in the shot put event.
This is the second career Athlete of the Week award for du Toit, who was also honored after the week of Mar. 30.

The team will get a week off before returning to action on May 13 for the C-USA Championships in Orlando.

SMU Posts Five Top-Five Finishes at Weekend Meets

The Mustang track & field team posted five top-five finishes at a pair matches over the weekend, one at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and one at the Michael Johnson Relays on the Baylor University campus in Waco.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, sophomore Simone du Toit placed third in the shot put with a throw of 16.41 meters. She also finished eighth in the discus throw (51.35m).

Junior Kristine Eikrem-Engeset placed fifth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:26.58 in California, while junior Aasha Marietta had a fifth-place finish in the same event (4:48.54) at the Michael Johnson Relays in Waco.

Also in Waco, senior Chelsea Wells placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.56).

And in Sacramento, Calif., freshman Klara Bodinson placed fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:31.32.

Next up for SMU is the Oklahoma Invitational, which will take place this Friday and Saturday in Norman, Okla.

Track & Field Posts Top 10 Finishes at Texas Relays

The SMU track & field team finished in the top 10 in three events over the weekend at the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Sophomore Simone du Toit, named the Co-Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Mar. 30, placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 16.00m.

The Mustang distance medley relay team – including freshmen Sara Sjokvist and Mary Alenbratt, sophomore Amber Evans and junior Kristine Eikrem-Engeset – also placed fifth with a time of 11:33.57.

Freshman Klara Bodinson finished tenth in the 1500m run (4:41:20) for SMU.

The team will next compete on Apr. 15-17 in the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
