The SMU men’s soccer team opened its home schedule last weekend by defeating George Mason and Oakland, winning the Prego’s Express Italian Men’s Soccer Invitational.

Senior forward Paulo da Silva was named the tournament’s MVP, while teammates Kekoa Osorio, Ryan Mirsky and Craig Hill were named to the all-tournament team.

Against George Mason on Friday, forward Manuel Mariel scored the first goal just four minutes into the game. The Mustangs looked to have the game in control by leading 1-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Mustangs continued to show why they were the dominant team. Da Silva, the Conference USA player of the week, scored on a pass by Jeff Harwell from 22 yards in the 77th minute. Ahead 2-0, the Mustangs did let up. In the 81st minute, freshman Diogo de Almeida scored off of a George Mason turnover.

The Mustangs kept their momentum in game two of the tournament, defeating Oakland 3-1 on Saturday to win the tournament title.

Freshman Payton Hickey scored his first collegiate goal in the 41st minute from an assist by Dane Saintus. Freshman Joe Cooper also scored his first goal with an assist from senior midfielder Gabriel Arredondo.

However, Oakland refused to be shut out. In the 70th minute, Martin Sandell nailed a shot just inside the left goal post. But just 23 seconds later, SMU solidified the win with a goal by sophomore Leone Cruz.

This weekend the fourth-ranked Mustangs (5-0-1) head to Oklahoma to play in the Tulsa Tournament, where they will face-off against Northern Illinois on Friday and Hofstra on Sunday.
