DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The energy is buzzing in Daytona at the NCA/NDA National Championship. Cheer and Pom squads from all over the nation (and the world—there is even a team here from Tokyo,) are nervously awaiting their scores and practicing for upcoming performances.
The SMU Pom squad is on cloud nine. We’re in first place in our division after our preliminary performance this morning. Our score—9.513, an entire three-tenths above our nearest competition. For those that aren’t familiar with dance competitions, that score is unreal. We’re pumped to perform at finals tomorrow morning, but tonight we have to keep working and make sure we don’t get too comfortable.
Right now, though, it’s time to nap. We got up at 6:00 a.m. to start hair and makeup before our 10:15 a.m. performance. Tonight, we’ll watch the SMU cheerleaders perform at 6:15 p.m., grab something to eat, and get back to work. It isn’t over yet.
All the teams here have worked hard all year for the chance to take home a national title, and now is no time for us to slack off or get too confident. We’re proud to represent SMU and we want to show everyone how much we love what we do.
