The SMU football team began the second week of spring practice Tuesday with ten more practices scheduled over the next 20 days.

Practice began with individual drills. The wide receivers warmed up on the ball machine then ran routes and caught passes from quarterbacks Kyle Padron and J.J. McDermott. The defense ran individual strength drills and completed foot work drills.

Following the first hour of drills, the offense and defense broke up into their full units to run plays and simulate game formations.

Padron, who Jones says is still fighting for his spot, led the Mustangs to a 6-1 record as a starter and a Sheraton Hawaii Bowl win in 2009. His individual performance last season has led to higher expectations for the 2010 season.

“My personal goal is to win the conference,” Padron said.

Reaching that goal may be tougher than last season since the Mustangs lose several leading players. Emmanuel Sanders, Chase Kennemer, Bryan McCann, and Shawnbrey McNeal worked out with the Dallas Cowboys at Valley Ranch Monday in preparation for the NFL Draft on April 22.

Check out SMU Daily Mustang Thursday for a full report on the position changes and vacancy questions left by the graduating senior class that need to be answered this spring.
