Former President George W. Bush made a surprise campus appearance Tuesday morning, taking pictures with students before disappearing in one of four black SUVs.

The former president was on campus to give a speech to one of Professor Harold Stanley’s political science classes in the Dedman Life and Science building.

SMU President Gerald Turner and several Secret Service agents accompanied Bush as he greeted students for about 15 minutes outside Dedman after his speech.

Courtney O’Callaghan, a sophomore journalism and advertising double major, congratulated Bush on the new library. He responded by saying, “It should be a cool place.”

After about 15 minutes, the ex-president left the crowd of nearly 80 students and said, “I’ll be back,” as he got into his black SUV.

The Daily Mustang and The Daily Campus broke the news of Bush’s impromptu visit on Twitter.

Student reporters Kaitlyn Dunne, Katie Horner and Sarah Pottharst contributed to this report.

… what’s so unusual about a former president speaking at a college? did i miss something? “board”? “pretty restless”? so normal activities for President Bush to be doing = superficial or he shouldn’t do that kinda stuff in retirement?

You should be honored that a man once entrusted via the process of an 7 month long national election process with the authority to alter the constitution and its powers as well as the balance of powers visited to your campus to speak your mind. Also, if a former president is bored and visits your campus regardless of your politics one should greet such a person with raised reverence and gratitude that he would reveal his thoughts regarding his decisions. Yes – the President of The United States is special and should never be taken lightly. I hope that SMU will adopt this oportunity to foster a relationship with our former president. I vote left and didn’t vote for this president in both elections.
