Student Health: Back to Breakfast

Ever think of skipping breakfast to cut calories? Do you find yourself too rushed in the morning to grab something to eat?

Well, this is where it all stops. Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day, so get ready to be convinced and never skip this meal again.

  • Eating breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism. This means that throughout the day you will burn more calories while simply at rest.
  • Eating breakfast will reduce cravings throughout the day, helping you make better food choices when you do eat. I mean, let’s get real here–if it’s noon, and you haven’t eaten anything all day, are you really going to order the grilled chicken salad? No. You are going to order the double cheese hamburger with a side of onion rings. It’s only natural.
  • Eating breakfast will wake you up in the morning and give you the energy you need to go on with your day. Eating in the morning also promotes physical exercise, which burns calories and help you lose weight.
  • Now, don’t even try–I’ve heard all the excuses before: “I don’t have time in the morning to eat,” “My schedule is too hectic,” “I’m not hungry in the morning,” “I always feel sick after I eat a big breakfast.” Wah, wah, wah. If you are one of these complainers, here is my rebuttal:

  • Start small. No one said you have to eat a stack of pancakes and a pound of bacon (actually, please don’t). Have an apple, a 200-calorie protein bar, a cup of yogurt, some cottage cheese, or a handful of almonds.
  • Pack it before you go to bed. Lay out a banana next to your car keys with a bottle of water or green tea, and eat it on your way to class or work.
  • If you aren’t hungry, it’s because your body is not fully awake. Wonder why you are sleepy all morning? Yeah, that’s why.
  • Studies show that, overall, people who eat breakfast weigh less than people who don’t. Also, those who skip out have a lower vitamin and mineral status and also consume more calories from fat (bad!).

    And, one last thing, a cup of coffee does not count as breakfast. At least make it a latte!
