The No. 37 SMU women’s tennis team battled it out against Florida International University for a hard-fought 6-1 win Sunday in Miami.

Although FIU left the game with only one point, they jumped out ahead in half of the singles matches. The Mustangs had to step up their game in order to fight back and earn the points for their team.

In doubles SMU was able to grab the point with two of three wins.

Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova took their fourth loss as a duo this spring against Liset Brito and Maria Spencely, falling 8-2.

Partners Edyta Cieplucha and Heather Steinbauer beat Giuletta Boha and Rita Maisak 8-3, while Shahzoda Hatamova and Kris Roberts had an 8-5 win over Lisa Johnson and Christine Seredni to secure the doubles point.

Although it wasn’t smooth sailing in the singles arena for the Mustangs, they were able to come out on top in five of six singles matches for the overall win.

No. 9 singles player in the nation Lesniak defeated FIU’s No. 57 Brito 6-4, 6-2. She has now won 12 in a row and has a spring record of 16-2.

Now 16-1 this season, No. 117 nationally ranked Malyarchikova downed Spenceley 6-1, 6-2.

Cieplucha, Steinbauer, and Hatamova had some work to do when it came to getting their wins. Cieplucha battled Seredni in a second-set tiebreaker to gain her 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) match win.

Another breaker was played between Steinbauer and Johnson, with Steinbauer prevailing in the 7-5, 7-6, (7-3) game. Hatamova fought it out against Maisak for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win.

FIU’s point was earned by Boha’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Roberts.

The SMU women’s tennis team hits the court again when they face rival No. 65 TCU at home Tuesday.

The SMU women’s soccer team came out kicking! The girls home-opener Friday marked the seventh matchup between the Mustangs and the Florida International Golden Panthers.

The Mustangs’ Lauren Shepherd scored the game-winning goal with 13 minutes left to continue their undefeated record against FIU. It was a beautiful night, the men’s soccer team was in attendance, and the girls were fired up.

Sophomore Kenzie Scovill came in at 24 minutes. She led the team in goals last season and made her presence known on the field Friday. Westcott Field was a little more exciting when she was on it. She was aggressive and determined as she went head to head, not backing down.

Kristin Medeiros, a senior leader on and off the field, showed excellent footwork. The veteran lived up to expectations with multiple breakaways and shots on goal. With 13:31 left in the second half, SMU senior forward Lauren Shepherd placed a bullet in the far left corner of the goal. The girls celebrated and took a sigh knowing they might pull this one out.

But at 7:29, the Panthers gave the Mustangs a scare. Luckily goalie Courtney Webb put a stop to the aggressive breakaway, becoming the star of the game. She played in every game last season and posted four shutouts. Friday she showed her experience; save after save she was calm, confident, and focused.
