No. 29 SMU Women’s Tennis Downs No. 60 Fresno State

The No. 29 SMU Women’s Tennis Team claimed another victory to improve its season record to 9-2 with an impressive 6-1 defeat over No. 60 Fresno State Sunday.

To start off the day, the Mustangs found themselves in a hard-fought battle to capture the doubles point.

At the No. 1 line, SMU pair Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova finished first with an 8-5 win over Jodoin and Modoc.

Bulldogs Pola and Hayley evened up the score with their 8-4 win over SMU’s Kris Roberts and Shahzoda Hatamova at the No. 3 spot.

With the point up for grabs, the No. 80 ranked duo of Heather Steinbauer and Edyta Cieplucha landed themselves in a heated tie-breaker to clinch the point. Down 4-2 early in the breaker, the team impressively battled back by winning the final five points to grab the doubles win.

When it came to singles play the Mustangs had no trouble defeating their opponents, winning 5 of 6 points in the singles arena.

Lesniak, nationally ranked No. 6 in singles, swept over No. 99 Marianne Jodoin 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.

Hatamova gained the third point for the Mustangs with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Olga Kirpicheva at the No. 5 position.

Cieplucha sealed the deal for SMU’s win by breezing over her No. 2 spot opponent Abby Hayley 6-1, 6-2.

Malyarchikova increased the lead for SMU by beating Melissa McQueen 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, and Steinbauer gained her own point with an intensely fought 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win at the No. 3 position against Laura Pola.

Fresno State’s lone win of the day was Bianca Modoc’s defeat over Kris Roberts at the No. 6 position, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.

The Mustang women’s tennis team hits the court again on Friday, March 4th when they host Conference USA rival No. 40 Tulsa at Turpin Tennis Center on the campus of SMU. Play starts at 2 p.m.
