Sure you could go exploring around Dallas this weekend, but there’s more than enough fun to be had right here in the SMU “Bubble.” Here’s our weekend line-up for fun right here in the Park Cities:

Kappa Alpha Crawfish Boil

Where: Across the Street Bar
Tickets are $20 at the door. Arrive with an empty belly and your Parrot Head party pants on.

Sam Edelman Spring Collection Debut
Where: Neiman Marcus at Northpark Center
What: Scope out the latest collection of the fan-favorite shoe line Sam Edelman. Gush a little; buy a little – it will be a good time. Also, Sam Edelman’s son will be in-house for a personal appearance and some shoe Q&A.
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.

SMU Retail Club Fashion Show
What: It’s the SMU fashion event of the season, and after a busy day of crawfish and shoe oogling, what’s better than sitting back and taking in some of the latest trends? The show begins with a panel of SMU student and alumni designers as well as several Dallas designers.
Where: The Meadows Museum (What a neat venue right? We thought so too.)
When: Saturday, 5-7 p.m.

Eat, Gather and Mingle At The Katy Trail Ice House
When: anytime! It’s the grand opening weekend
What: Enjoy the great weather, grab an ice cold drink, and sit down to enjoy a burger.

DALLAS International Film Festival Closing Weekend
Where: Angelika, Highland Park Village, Magnolia & many others
What: The closing weekend of these film festivals are sometimes the best part – all the winners, all day, all over town. Scope out their schedule online for tickets, trailers and showtimes.
Why: You can say you’re cool and underground because you’re not seeing Hollywood’s latest blockbuster and who knows—you might run into a celebrity.

Fashionistas, students, and employees of Neiman Marcus stood in awe as they met Manolo Blahnik, the shoe icon himself, as he autographed shoe soles and his second book.

“In the first minute of meeting him, you can see his personality that shines through in his shoes,” Haley Schutheis blogger and editor for said.

Neiman Marcus NorthPark invited guests for a Friday afternoon to meet Manolo Blahnik in the shoe salon. Guests snacked on hors d’oeuvres and sipped wine while waiting in line to meet the legendary shoe designer and snap a few photographs. A set of violinists added the perfect touch to a stylish soiree.

Blahnik was pre-selling his book Manolo’s New Shoes, which is full of artful sketches of first drafts of the iconic shoes he has created. The book has themed sections from around the world. Shoe lovers were fighting over the last copies as it was already sold out by the time the event started on the first day of October.

In an interview before the book signing started, Blahnik said that SMU students looking for shoes to add to their fall collection should get a simple black pump and a ballet flat.

He has a broken foot himself and added that young girls should certainly not wear a high platform or they might fall. If women are going to wear a flat shoe, they should remember to “make an effort to be feminine,” Mr. Blahnik added with his chic European accent.

Ladies shoes sales associate Patrick Tichacek said Blahnik’s shoes are “beautiful, feminine, and timeless… not for a certain age but for a feminine customer… Not someone who is driven by trends.”

Tichacek said his clients could wear the beautifully crafted shoes with an evening gown or a pair of jeans.

Shultheis said when wearing Manolo Blahnik stilettos, “let the shoes do the speaking.” Shultheis blushed when she met Blahnik.

He loved the shoes she chose for him to sign, “I picked a classic glamorous pair [the rhinestone buckled d’orsay] it was from “Sex in the City” [the movie].”
She will wear her newly signed heels to work with a suit or with a fun cocktail dress.

An excited young customer left the event saying, “Wow, I can’t believe that was really him standing right next to me!”

In his book, Blahnik wrote, “When I was approached to do a second volume of my sketches my immediate reaction was, ‘Oh no, not again!’ But then, two minutes later, I thought to myself, Why not? If what has for me become a way to relax is entertaining to others…”
